CPD – Working at Height

About Course

This comprehensive course provides essential safety knowledge for managing risks associated with working at height, aligning with international standards like OSHA and UK regulations. Learners will explore the working at height hierarchy of control—focusing on avoiding, preventing, and minimising falls—alongside critical hazards like fragile roofs, material deterioration, and adverse weather. The curriculum covers safe practices for common access equipment, including scaffolding, mobile towers, MEWPs, and ladders, while detailing vital inspection regimes, emergency rescue planning for suspension trauma, and falling object mitigation. Ideal for construction and maintenance professionals, this course ensures robust protection for workers and the public.

What Will You Learn?

  • The Scope and Risk Factors: Define working at height according to international standards (including OSHA’s 2m threshold) and describe how vertical distance, unprotected edges, and material deterioration affect overall risk.
  • The Hierarchy of Control: Describe how to systematically manage risks by avoiding work at height (ground-level assembly), preventing falls (using existing safe structures or restraints), and minimising fall consequences.
  • Safe Practices for Roof Work: Describe the specific access, crawling board, and edge protection requirements needed to safely work on flat, pitched, and fragile roofs.
  • Ladder and Stepladder Safety: Describe the limitations, positioning rules (the 1:4 angle rule), pre-use inspection criteria, and stabilization techniques for ladders and stepladders.
  • Scaffolding Design and Components: Describe the structural features and safety components (such as sole boards, standards, transoms, toe-boards, and brick guards) of independent tied scaffolds.
  • Scaffold Inspections and Reporting: Describe the legal inspection regimes (including the 7-day rule and post-storm checks) and the necessary details required in a competent person\'s written report.
  • Mobile Tower Scaffolding: Describe the stability rules, height-to-base ratios, wheel-locking procedures, and safe movement protocols for mobile tower scaffolds.
  • MEWP and Mobile Access Operations: Describe the safe plant, safe workplace, and safe operator controls required to prevent the overturn or collapse of Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs).
  • Fall Arrest and Rescue Procedures: Describe the deployment of personal fall protection equipment and the critical emergency rescue protocols necessary to mitigate fatal suspension trauma.
  • Protection of Others and Safe Storage: Describe how to prevent injuries from falling objects using netting, debris chutes, and fans, alongside the principles of safe material stacking and storage.
